NEWRY, Maine -- What do you get when you build a mountain of snow in downtown Portland's Monument Square, and then add a rail feature built by Sunday River and Sugarloaf? The second annual Downtown Showdown urban rail jam scheduled for January 30, 2010.
"The Downtown Showdown allows us to bring the mountains to the city and share the excitement of skiing and riding with a broader audience," said Nick Lambert, brand manager for Sunday River and Sugarloaf.
For the event, Sunday River and Sugarloaf are busy building a new cannon rail to include with last year's two-story take off and 30-foot three-rail staircase.
The Downtown Showdown is an invitation-only event and includes 12 skiers and 12 riders from industry teams, shops and academies.
Over $5,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs for the first, second and third place skiers and riders.
The Downtown Showdown starts at 5 p.m. and consists of an open rail jam before moving into finals between 6-7 p.m. Finals include the best six skiers and snowboarders as deemed by the judges.
Thanks to sponsorship help from Red Bull and Oakley, this year's Downtown Showdown also features a DJ, MC, lights and music.
