NORTH CONWAY, New Hampshire -- Long known as the place to learn to ski, North Conway's Cranmore Mountain has now partnered with Eastern Mountain Sports to bring telemark ski instruction to its slopes this winter.

Telemark skiing, also known as "free-heel" skiing, is rapidly growing in popularity throughout the skiing community. Unlike alpine skiing equipment, the telemark binding only connects the boot to the ski at the toe which allows comfortable striding. The telemark turn was developed around the mid 1800s in the telemark region of Norway as a means of steering and controlling speed on the downhill run, while modern telemark equipment provides enough support to make parallel turns possible. The telemark turn provides more stability and control throughout the turn and provides a new challenge at Cranmore.

This year, Cranmore Mountain Resort has partnered with Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) located at Settler's Crossing on Route 16, North Conway, to offer telemark instruction on select dates throughout the winter.

All programs will meet at the EMS North Conway store where skiers can purchase a Cranmore lift ticket as well as be fitted for rental equipment before heading over to the slopes. All reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by calling 800-310-4504. Pricing does not include lift ticket, it includes lesson and rental equipment.
