WILMINGTON, New York -- Whiteface, the Olympic Mountain, recently completed another outstanding NASTAR season by ranking first in the mid-Atlantic region, first overall in the east and seventh nationally in racer days by season's end.
A total of 123 resorts hosted NASTAR activity during the 2007-08 winter season. Whiteface's performance was an improvement from last winter when the mountain, burdened with a late start due to weather issues, placed 11th.
NASTAR is the acronym for National Standard Race. It incorporates national handicaps for recreational skiers and boarders, similar to golf handicaps, and allows racers of different abilities to compete fairly.
This winter, Whiteface saw 7,556 racer days, twice as many as a year ago. This led to 16,740 starts, almost twice the number of last season. Both figures were tops in the mid-Atlantic. In addition to its seventh place standing nationally, Whiteface was the top performer among all eastern resorts.
"As NASTAR has become more popular, we're happy to say that Whiteface has been able to offer recreational skiers and riders a quality venue for these fun races," said Whiteface Manager Jay Rand. The NASTAR course is set on the intermediate Tower 10 hill on Lower Valley.
"Our staff, headed by Ken Carre and Bill Scheefer, continues to make this a fun experience for residents and visitors alike. Our start building is among the finest anywhere and we're happy to present this ambiance and enjoyment to our guests."
