New Clocktower Face Caps Six Million Dollar Summer at Mount Snow

WEST DOVER, Vermont -- One of the signature landmarks at the Mount Snow ski resort is getting a new look just in time for the upcoming winter.

The Clocktower building, which stands at the main entrance of the ski resort, is getting a new clock face designed by Wood & Wood Sign Systems of Waitsfield, Vermont. It is projected to be in place by the start of the 2007-08 ski and snowboard season, and resort officials view its completion as the crowning achievement of an off-season that has seen more than $6 million in capital investments under the new ownership of Peak Resorts.

"We reviewed dozens of clock styles from all around the world," says Mount Snow general manager Kelly Pawlak. "We feel we've chosen something that brings the Clocktower up to date with the direction the resort is going while preserving its place in Mount Snow lore."

The Clocktower exterior had already been re-painted earlier in the summer as part of a $2.5 million "refresh" project that touched every building in the three base areas. All buildings in the Main Base Area now have a uniform exterior color. In addition to new paint, carpeting and tile, both ski and snowboard rental shops have been retrofitted to streamline the equipment rental process, directional signs have been revamped, and the Main Base Lodge bathrooms have undergone a complete overhaul.

Mount Snow also spent approximately $4 million to upgrade on-mountain operations in time for Winter 2007-08. This includes the purchase of 101 energy-efficient fan guns from SMI Snowmakers, Inc., and a new PistenBully 600 grooming machine.

Originally built in the 1960s, the Clocktower housed Mount Snow's famous gondola chairlift. The entire structure was moved to its current place in the early 1980s to be a welcoming center. It currently houses administrative offices and guest services such as lift ticket sales, equipment rentals and ski maintenance.

Wood & Wood Systems has worked with several prominent Vermont businesses, including Ben & Jerry's, the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
